"Essential grocery store workers would also suffer under this deal, facing the threat of their wages dwindling, benefits diminishing, and their working conditions deteriorating." Kroger said in a statement that blocking the deal "will actually harm the very people the FTC purports to serve: America's consumers and workers." The company also pledged $500 million to reduce prices for customers and $1 billion to raise employee wages and expand benefits. Two unions that represent Kroger and Albertsons employees, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union and the Teamsters union, opposed the deal. Higher grocery prices have irked consumers and become a hot topic on the campaign trail.

A spokesperson from the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) told CNN on Sunday that it supports the organizers planning a walkout and protests. “UFCW members and staff have been communicating with many of the CVS and Walgreens workers who have been taking actions to stand up for their rights on the job.

Aaron Smith, CEO of the National Cannabis Industry Association, speaks during a news conference on the Safe Banking Act outside the U.S. Capitol in Washington, Sept. 14, 2022. The Senate banking committee is holding its first-ever hearing Thursday on a bipartisan bill that would allow the cannabis industry to access traditional banking services, which marijuana businesses see as critical to their survival. The meeting, titled Examining Cannabis Banking Challenges of Small Businesses and Workers, will hear testimony from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, including Sens. Thursday's hearing will determine next steps in getting the bill to the Senate floor for a vote, as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and other key lawmakers express support for it. "Without full access to the banking and payments system, legal cannabis businesses are forced to operate in the shadows," said Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, who is also chair of the committee.

Photo: Asa Featherstone, IV for The Wall Street JournalThe United Food and Commercial Workers International Union said it opposes the planned merger between Kroger and Albertsons , adding to tensions over the $20 billion supermarket deal. Federal worker safety inspections have alleged poor maintenance or a lack of safety training at some Tyson plants where ammonia leaks injured workers. CNN interviewed eleven current or former Tyson workers across three different plants who experienced ammonia leaks. !”A safety sign hangs on a fence at a Tyson plant in Hope, Arkansas, in March 2023. Still, some Tyson workers who lived through ammonia leaks said they wished more had been done to protect them. That means that the data doesn’t necessarily cover Tyson plants or other meat facilities that hold smaller amounts of ammonia.

America's largest meatpacking union, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, said it negotiated an agreement with Arkansas-based Tyson to end the mandate. He added that Tyson kept other safety protocols like requiring workers to self-screen for COVID-19 symptoms. This year, about 630,000 more Americans per month are calling out sick for a week or more than pre-pandemic. Even though an elevated number of workers are still getting sick, employers are losing their patience. One union told Insider that the disparity highlights the need for guaranteed sick leave. "UFCW fights hard to ensure guaranteed sick leave is included in our contracts so employers can't simply cut back on leave because they're 'tired of excuses.'" When it comes to low-wage employees, over 60% don't have access to sick leave, according to a September study from the Economic Policy Institute.
